What does NIIED's guide say loses points?

NIIED's 2017 writing guide says these lose points on the TOPIK II paper test:

  • Questions 51 and 52: vocabulary or grammar that does not fit the context loses points.
  • Questions 51 and 52: added content that harms the original meaning loses points.
  • Questions 51 and 52: wrong spelling, or a style that does not match the formality of the text, loses points.
  • Questions 53 and 54: a spoken-style expression, or a sentence ending in -ㅂ/습니다 or -아/어요, loses points.

The same 2017 guide says not to do these. It does not say that they lose points:

  • Questions 51 and 52: the guide says not to repeat the words before or after the brackets in the answer.
  • Question 51: the guide says not to write more than one sentence; its instruction then read “in one sentence each”, and the one applied from TOPIK PBT 75 does not.
  • Question 53: the guide says not to interpret the data freely or add a personal opinion unrelated to it.
  • Questions 53 and 54: the guide says not to write in note form, as a list of points.

How do you write on the squared answer sheet?

On the TOPIK II paper test the answer sheets for questions 53 and 54 are squared manuscript paper (원고지), NIIED's post of its note on that paper says. The note's 7 rules, in our translation:

  1. One character in each square.
  2. At the start of the text, and of every new paragraph, leave the first square of the line empty and begin in the second.
  3. Inside a paragraph the first square of a line is not left empty: when no square is left at the end of a line for a space, do not leave the space; begin the next line in its first square (with or without the V mark).
  4. Arabic numerals go two to a square.
  5. A punctuation mark takes one square; a dash or an ellipsis takes two.
  6. Leave one square empty after a question mark or an exclamation mark. After a full stop, a comma or a colon you do not have to.
  7. When a character fills the last square of a line and no square is left for its punctuation mark, the mark goes into that same square.
An example written by this site to show rules 1, 2, 4, 6. It is not an NIIED item, and its width is not the width of the real answer sheet.
